Task 2

150 words

Machine played an irreplaceable role around the industrial revolution period. The article, The Machine in Architecture Thinking points out that the process of machine blending into architectural design. Conflicts always take place when a new sense of understanding comes to change tradition. As we known, mechanisation brought efficiency but also broke the traditional definition of beauty. It leads the changes of proportion and geometry of building form. “None of the optimally efficient products could have been designed without analytical intellectual tools, without the rigor of the modus geometricus.” Then the unfamiliar character of machine makes sense. Consequently, “the building became a means of achieving no longer purity and harmony, but optimal efficiency.” That was the main reason that the conflict occurred. The word, ‘nature’ repeatedly turns up in the article. Machine certainly creates the artificial trace to the building environment so that the ‘nature’ breaks. However, the way of putting machines into environment without destroying the original feature would be the most important thing that needs to be considered.
